Help!
Help! We’ve just had unsafe sex!
Most gay men slip up and have sex that isn’t as safe as they’d like it to be at some point. Beating yourself up about it won’t help. HIV is not as infectious as many other STIs so even if your partner is HIV positive it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will become positive too. If you can get to a GUM clinic or Accident and Emergency department within 72 hours of the time you had unsafe sex then you could be prescribed PEP, which may be able to prevent you becoming infected. If you are not able to get PEP then you might want to think about whether or not to take an HIV test. If you decide to test, bear in mind that it will be three months before you can be sure that the test will be accurate as it can take this long for the HIV antibodies, which the test detects, to show up.
It’s probably worth thinking about what made you have unsafe sex this time. Did you feel pressurised into it? Or were you just feeling a little bit out of control, perhaps because of drink or drugs? Are there ways that you can think of to avoid getting into similar situations? Assertiveness training, may help you to keep your own safer sex rules in the future.
Help! The condom broke!
If your condom split or came off the last time you had sex, don’t panic. HIV is not as infectious as many other STIs - so even if your partner is HIV positive it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will become positive too. If you can get to a GU clinic or Accident and Emergency department within 72 hours of the unsafe sex then you could be prescribed PEP, which may be able to prevent you becoming infected. If you are not able to get PEP then you might want to think about whether or not to take an HIV test. If you decide to test, bear in mind that it will be three months before you can be sure that the test will be accurate as it can take this long for the HIV antibodies, which the test detects, to show up.
Condoms provide the best protection against HIV, and many other STIs, for gay men who fuck. But condoms are not 100% effective. About one in every seven gay men who fuck had a condom split on them, or slip off, in the last year. Looking after your condoms, putting the condom on correctly, and using the right type and amount of lube will decrease the chance that the condom won’t work.
The London clinic guide
If you are looking for free HIV testing and sexual health screening, the NHS
provides over 30 GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) clinics across London, details of
which follow. If you need a clinic outside London you can search for one here:
www.condomessentialwear.co.uk/get-help
Most clinics have health advisors who can talk to you about any worries you have about your sex life. They will also be able to advise you on what vaccinations are available and help you decide whether it is a good idea for you to take an HIV test.
Services are confidential, but if you still want to use a false name you can do so.
All clinics will offer gay men Hepatitis B vaccination and many will also vaccinate you against Hepatitis A.
You can use the clickable map of London to find a clinic near where you live or work, but we suggest you read the following information first.
Making an appointment
At most clinics you need to call to book an appointment. It usually takes about a week before you can get an appointment, although this will vary from clinic to clinic. If you do not say that you are a gay man then you may have to wait a lot longer. Most appointment times are during the day, although some clinics offer an 'after hours' service. Be warned, as with booked appointments in a doctor's surgery, sometimes you'll find you still have to wait for quite some time before they can see you, so best to allow some leeway if you're taking time off work.
Walk in services
As a general rule, if you want to use a walk in service rather than wait for an appointment, it is advisable to arrive at the clinic as early as possible. Walk in space gets booked up very quickly and some clinics open their doors half an hour before they actually begin to see patients in order to allocate the available walk in space on a first come first served basis. Call in advance to check with the clinic you wish to visit or if in doubt get to the clinic 30 minutes before the clinic start time. Also be prepared to spend at least three hours in the clinic waiting, even if you do get there early.
Changes to services provided
Please note that services change over time and it can take quite a while before notices, leaflets, recorded messages and websites are updated. For this reason we strongly recommend that you call the clinic you wish to visit before doing so, to ensure that their services are still operating as advertised. We do our best to keep the information provided here up to date, but if you do find services that are no longer operating as advertised, we would be grateful if you would inform us by clicking on the ‘Feedback on this page’ button underneath the left hand menu.
