If you are HIV-positive in another clinic, you can register at the Ian Charleson Centre as a ‘new patient’ and access care regardless of where you were diagnosed. However, if you have not been resident in the UK for long you may be asked to see anoverseas officer to assess your eligibility for NHS care.

If you have tested at another facility or you want to transfer from another HIV treatment centre, please call 020 7830 2051 to make a new patient appointment. You will need to provide your name, address, date of birth and GP details.

Once you are registered you will be given a unique patient number. Please write this down as you will need to quote it in further interactions with the clinic. You will be offered a new patient clinic appointment. Please arrive no sooner than 15 minutes before your appointment time, but no later than 30 minutes after your appointment time.

At your new patient appointment, you will be seen by one of our senior HIV doctors who will take a full medical history, request appropriate blood tests and any other investigations, and arrange any follow-up appointments.

Baseline blood tests usually include:

  • HIV confirmatory test
  • HIV viral load
  • Full blood count
  • CD4 count
  • Routine biochemistry (liver & kidney function and lipids)
  • Infection screens for Hepatitis A, B, and C and syphilis
  • HIV resistance test
