PHE are reporting that there has been a sharp rise of cases of shigella for gay and bisexual men over the last couple of months.

Shigella is highly infectious and is easily spread by infected poo getting into another person’s mouth, either directly or from unwashed hands and oral sex. Although infection can be asymptomatic, shigella can cause unpleasant symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea (which can sometimes contain blood or mucus), fever, and abdominal pain.

In severe infection or certain situations antibiotics may be advised. Some shigella infections are now resistant to multiple antibiotics meaning that treatment is less likely to be effective and infected people can take weeks or longer to fully recover.

It is important that gay and bisexual men take steps to protect themselves against shigella. For more information about shigella, its symptoms and how to prevent it, visit
