A message from GMFA's Chief Executive, Ian Howley

World AIDS Day is always an important time for us at LGBT HERO (GMFA's parent organisation). GMFA was formed back in 1992 at a time when we were seeing many of our friends and family die from HIV and AIDS. It was a time when we didn't have effective medication and the most many could hope for was to extend their lives by a couple of years.

Today, we live in a world where people living with HIV have the same life expectancy as everyone else. We live in a world where people living with HIV, who are on effective medication, cannot pass on the virus through sex. We live in a world where HIV-negative men can take a pill which is 99% effective in preventing HIV transmissions. How far we have come? But there is still a long way to go.

GMFA exists because we are still seeing high number of gay and bisexual men becoming HIV-positive. Many of these men face stigma associated with the virus which leads to many having mental health issues, with some taking their own lives. This is not acceptable and we are better than this.

This is why on World AIDS Day we want you to remember all those we have lost to the virus but celebrate just how far we have come. Wear your red ribbon with pride. This is why on World AIDS Day we're asking you to support GMFA in any way you can and join us in the fight to end HIV and stop HIV stigma once and for all.

Ian Howley
Chief Executive
