About GMFA - the gay men's health project

GMFA is the gay men's health project brought to you by HERO - Health Equality and Rights Organisation. GMFA wants to empower gay, bisexual men and men who have sex with men to create personal and social change change in their lives and our community.

GMFA was created in 1992 to address the fact that gay and bisexual men were the group most likely to become infected by HIV in the UK. At that time, hardly any resources specifically targeted gay and bisexual men. GMFA quickly earned a reputation for delivering frank, honest and often sexual campaigns for gay and bisexual men.

We at HERO believe that the most effective health promotion for gay and bisexual men comes from gay and bisexual men themselves. For this reason, we use the knowledge and skills of our volunteers, most of them gay and bisexual men, to design and plan our health projects. These include advertising campaigns and small media resources; FS magazine; HIV testing services; support for gay and bisexual men living with HIV; free workshops for gay and bisexual men - and this website. GMFA is by gay and bisexual men for gay and bisexual men.

HIV and sexual health remain at the heart of our work but we also seek to reduce other health inequalities that gay and bisexual men suffer. Gay and bisexual men are more likely to smoke, have concerns about their alcohol consumption and take recreational drugs than heterosexual men, and all of these have a negative impact on gay and bisexual men’s health.

HERO through our GMFA brand works aims to improve gay and bisexual men's health by increasing the control that they have over their own lives. We do this by providing information, support and guidance, free from judgment, and using the same language that gay and bisexual men will use conversationally with each other. Our goal is that no gay or bisexual man suffers poor health as a result of their sexuality. Through our work we will enable gay and bisexual men to enjoy better choices, better health and enjoy and judgement free sex life.

HERO relies on the support and generosity of individuals from the LGBTQ+ community to run GMFA. This support is vital in enabling us to continue providing men who have sex with men with the information and support that they need to live happy and healthier lives.
