Himat Rakho / Himat Courage- South Asian Gay Men’s Group/Parents group

For many South Asian Gay men, facing up to being different can be full of unique problems. Being a minority within a minority, they can experience a strong sense of isolation from other gay men. They may also find it difficult to access information regarding sexuality, HIV transmission, emotional and physical issues, condoms and sexually transmitted infection information One of the main problems is that they often find it difficult to meet other South Asian men who share their sexual orientation, especially if they live with their families. They may be forced to conceal their sexuality and even enter “sham” marriages due to intense cultural pressures. LEAN is running is a support group to address these issues. The group is called Himat, which takes its name from the Hindi/Urdu word for “courage”. Himat takes the lead to meet the particular emotional and practical needs of South Asian gay, bisexual men and men who have sex with men in East London. Himat meets on the last Thursday of the month in a central London location. This is a safe and confidential space to talk about whatever you would like to talk about. Naz Latina—Latin American HIV Group

It is estimated that there are over 200,000 Latin Americans living in London. However while there are many cultural groups, there are still no specific community based organisations in London that cater for their social, legal and human rights. Contrary to general perception, Latin Americans continue to arrive in the UK all the time, in large numbers and from all walks of life. The spread of the AIDS epidemic in Latin America is reflected in these communities in London. Women and men can be working in the sex industry without any friends or family at home being aware of it. This group is, by definition, hard to reach with safe sex advice and treatment options. So it is all the more important to reach out to them with material that is linguistically and culturally appropriate. Naz Latina seeks to increase awareness of Latin American cultures amongst health care professionals. They provide training for STI clinic staff at hospitals throughout London.

Naz Vidas

It is estimated that there are over 100,000 Brazilians living in London. However while there are many cultural groups, there are still no specific community based organisations in London that cater for their social, legal and human rights. Contrary to general perception, Brazilians continue to arrive in the UK all the time, in large numbers and from all walks of life. The spread of the AIDS epidemic in Brazil is reflected in our communities in London. There are more people from Brasil accessing Sexual Health clinics in the UK than ever before, and within this group, more women in addition to gay and bisexual men. Women and men can be working in the sex industry without any friends or family at home being aware of it. This group is, by definition, hard to reach with safe sex advice and treatment options. Living as a gay man in Grampian can sometimes be difficult; gay and bisexual men have the right to access health and social services which respect their confidentiality and provide sound advice and information tailored to their needs. The Grampian Gay Men’s Health Project aims to promote the sexual health of gay and bisexual men, reduce the spread of HIV within the gay community and challenge the discrimination that can be faced by gay and bisexual men including those affected & infected by HIV. The project provides the following services: information and advice, outreach to public sex environments, health promotion events, condom and lube distribution, and a safe and supportive environment for gay and bisexual men to address any issues relating to their sexual health. Through the provision of these services, the project aims to make sure that men who have sex with men in Grampian are able to maintain their sexual health in a way which values both themselves and their partners.

Site and Youth Net—on line

TheSite.org aims to be the first place all young adults turn to when they need support and guidance through life. They believe all young people have the capacity to make their own decisions and life choices, provided they have access to high quality, impartial information and advice. They don’t tell anyone how to lead their lives—they just believe everybody should have all the information they need to make their own decisions. They provide factsheets and articles on all the key issues facing young people including: sex and relationships; drinking and drugs; work and study; housing, legal and finances; and health and wellbeing. Their vibrant community area works hand-in-hand with this content. Here, their users can seek peer-to-peer support and advise each other on the issues concerning them. Meeting young people where they’re at right now, TheSite.org will continue to be an inclusive social environment enabling all 16–24 year-olds to express themselves and address the issues that concern them. YouthNet, the charity behind TheSite.org, also runs a sister site, do-it.org.uk. Launched in 2001, do-it.org.uk is the most diverse and comprehensive national database of volunteering opportunities in the UK. Each month, do-it.org.uk attracts an average of 35,000 visitors. Waverley Care Buddy Service

Buddies at Waverley Care are trained volunteers who provide social, practical and emotional support to people living with HIV. Buddies have a willing ear, compassion, patience and want to make a difference in the life of a person living with HIV.

Clients of the Buddy Service have only one thing in common—their HIV status. Clients of their service are from all backgrounds, cultures and of all ages. It reflects the diversity of society as a whole. They provide Buddies to people living in Edinburgh and the Lothian, whether they have a home, are homeless or are in prison.
