Gay Outdoor Club - Walking

The Gay Outdoor Club organise over 400 walking events through more than 30 groups in all parts of the country. Events vary from easy afternoon strolls - sometimes with refreshment before, during and after - through to strenuous walks over high moorland and long-distance events. Scrambling and mountain-walking are offered by groups in the appropriate areas, with more strenuous events organised by the mountaineering group. More than 40 events per year are entire weekends, usually at youth hostels or camping, and there are also overseas trips.

For details see the main Gay Outdoor Club details or visit www.goc.org.uk/Activities/Walking.htm

Gay Sunday Walking Group

Whether you call it walking, hiking or rambling the Gay Sunday Walking group goes out and enjoys it in London, Middlesex, Essex, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire on all-day and half-day outings each month.

The all-day walks are eight to 15 miles long, usually starting and finishing at a railway station within an hour’s travel from a London terminus. There is often a lunchtime stop at a pub serving food. The half-days are three to six miles and mostly start at a pub. Some years there are also weeks and weekends away.

GSWG is open to gay men, lesbians as well as straight men and women with a positive attitude. There are around 160 members, most of whom are gay men. Between 10 and 40 people join a walk.

Historic Walking Tour of Gay Soho

Every Sunday an experienced guide takes a group on a tour around Soho, chatting about its rich cultural history and indeed the richness it offers today. Hear about everything from the 17th century Molly trials, to the haunts of Oscar Wilde, Noel Coward, Virginia Woolf, Radclyffe Hall and Derek Jarman. From the clandestine club life of the 30s and 40s to the underground world of the 50s. With a serial killer or two thrown into the mix, this is a tour that every visitor or indeed local should do. There’s no need to book ahead, and group rates are available.

Out & About

Stately home Out & About started shortly after the year 2000, with organised but informal walks around historic districts of London and visits to stately homes, gardens and other places of architectural or historic interest. Many newcomers comment on how friendly the group is. Some members are frequent walkers, attending most events, whereas others might only be seen two or three times in a year.

There is also a wide range of backgrounds, with some real enthusiasts for history, architecture, gardens and gardening, and some others who are simply content to enjoy being in the company of ther gay men in a relaxed atmosphere.

Communication is by email, and anyone who wishes to keep in contact by post can do so in return for a book of second-class stamps.
