HIV Statistics

According to the HPA, in 2006 the estimated number of people in the UK living with HIV was 72,000. The estimated number of these people who did not know they were infected was 21,600.

The HPA also estimated that in 2006, the number of gay men in the UK living with HIV was 31,100 and that 9,200 of them were undiagnosed.

The Gay Men's Sex Survey in 2006 showed that prevalence of diagnosed HIV among gay men in the UK was 7.9%. In London HIV prevalence of diagnosed HIV among gay men was 12.7%. Actual prevalence is higher because an estimated one third of gay men living with HIV have not been diagnosed.
