World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day falls on 1 December each year. The first World AIDS Day was declared by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1998 and each year the occasion is an opportunity to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS and to remember those we have lost to the virus.

For GMFA, World AIDS Day is a vital opportunity for us to raise money for the work that we do. It is the major fundraising activity of the year for us, and without the money we raise around World AIDS Day we simply could not continue with some of the unfunded work that we do. Our work aimed at improving the health and well being of HIV positive gay men is one such project, and so World AIDS Day, and the support we get from the community around that time of year, is vital to the survival of that work.

If you own or manage a gay venue, business or organisation and are interested in supporting GMFA on World AIDS Day 2009, please contact tim.molloy@gmfa.org.uk

GMFA’s World AIDS Day 2008 press release

Community support for GMFA on World AIDS Day

GMFA, the gay men’s health charity, were overwhelmed by the level of support that they received from their supporters on World AIDS Day. More gay venues, organisations and businesses than ever before supported the charity this year through a variety of different fundraising events and activities, which look set to have raised almost £20,000 for the charity.

“Gay men are still the group most affected by HIV in the UK. The campaigns and resources that GMFA produce to support gay men living with HIV, such as the website for positive gay men, get no Government funding and so we depend on the support of the community to continue with this work. This World AIDS Day’s amazing total could not have been achieved without the support and generosity of the many individuals, gay venues and businesses that raised money for GMFA. We’re thrilled and hugely grateful and want to thank everyone who has supported us in 2008, by donating money or volunteering for us,” said Matthew Hodson of GMFA.

GMFA would like to send their heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in fundraising events at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Barcode Soho, Barcode Vauxhall, the 2Brewers, the Black Cap, KW4, Rupert Street, Halfway to Heaven, Comptons, the Edge, Kazbar, Kudos, the Green, the King’s Arms, the Rose & Crown, The Quebec, the Queen’s Head, 79 CXR, the Yard, the Duke of Wellington, the Admiral Duncan, the Village, Prowler Soho, DV8 Soho, the Gay Sex & Fetish Awards, the Gay Gordons, NHS Islington and Recon. Their efforts will help GMFA continue its vital work for gay men’s health.
